With an attractive design and a very thin case, this external USB 3 G-Tech G-Drive mobile USB offers good rates under Windows, but requires reformatting. However, it is ready for Mac OS.
The external drive G-Technology G-Drive mobile USB offers speeds of about 99 MB / s read and 85 MB / s write for large file transfers in Windows.
The promise
G-Technology, a subsidiary of Western Digital offers a USB 3.0 external drive G-Tech G-Drive mobile USB designed for the Apple MacBook laptop users. The G-Drive Mobile USB 3.0 uses the HFS + file format, but can be reformatted for use with Windows. Is it fast? To find out, we have brought the test of capacity 1 TB.
Reality
Surprise, the G-Drive Mobile USB 3.0 is as thin as the G-Drive slim with a thickness of only 1.2 cm. The case, black and silver is very elegant, but it is unfortunate that the activity LED white, placed at the back is so small. It also regrets the lack of software. The drive is formatted HFS + for use directly with Apple computers. It also runs on Windows, except to reformat to NTFS. Too bad G-Technology does not deliver any program to do this, not obvious to a novice.
More than 100 MB / s speed
After formatting to NTFS, the G-Drive Mobile USB 3.0 offers a comfortable capacity of 931 GB under Windows. The performances are generally good, but a little off the face of competing models such as the Mobile Drive Sq from Freecom TV and Silicon Power Diamond D05. CrystalDiskMark with the program, measured peak speeds of 103 MB / s read and write, against more than 110 MB / s for the other two models. With the transfer test DivX files (700 MB) Disk G-Technology reaches speeds of 98.8 MB / s read and 85.4 MB / s write (106.3 MB / s and 104 MB / s for the Mobile Drive Sq TV). The playback speed is higher for medium sized files, but the write speed drops to 56.4 MB / s for MP3 and Jpeg photos 23.1. However, these scores are slightly higher than those of the Mobile Drive Sq TV (49.5 and 20.4 MB / s).
The verdict
The G-Drive Mobile USB 3.0 is a perfect companion for MacBook users thanks to its superb design and formatting suitable for Mac OS. It is also a good external hard drive for Windows provided to pass the course reformatting.
