Plextor M5 Pro a complete and fast SSD: Review & Specs

Plextor renews its SSD range and launched the successor to the M3 Pro. With a new Marvell controller to manage the flash memory, the Plextor M5 Pro is available in capacities from 128 to 512 GB and below we have mentioned the review of Plextor M5 Pro 256GB model which provides, according to the manufacturer speeds of 540 MB / s read and 450MB / s write. What are its actual performances?

Reality

As the M3 Pro, Plextor M5 Pro has an excellent installation kit includes a 3.5-inch cradle to fix it in a desktop PC, and the program Acronis True Image HD CD. With this cloning program you can easily copy Windows and applications from your computer hard drive to the SSD. No need to reinstall everything. The Plextor SSD has sleek brushed aluminium. Lightweight, it measures only 7mm thick, instead of the traditional 9.5 mm, which makes it compatible with the latest ultra-thin laptops. In contrast, the SSD may not be enough in a stalled housing 9.5 mm. Plextor damage that does not deliver a small plastic frame to increase the thickness if necessary.

High flow rates in real

After formatting to NTFS, the Plextor M5 Pro offers a capacity of 238 GB under Windows. With the ATTO test, it reaches top speeds of 546 MB / s read and 458 MB / s write. But the SSD is also very fast with the sequential test CrystalDiskMark representative transferring large files. The rates are excellent with 530 MB / s read, an exceptional score, and 456 MB / s write. The M5 Pro also runs perfectly transfer small files and reaches speeds of 384 MB / s read and 349 MB / s write in optimal conditions. Finally, it proves capable of processing a large amount of small files, a major advantage if several programs use the SSD at the same time.

The verdict

Thanks to its excellent performance Plextor SSD into the big and sometimes elbow-to-elbow with 4 OCZ Vertex and Neutron GTX Corsair. It is more expensive than its two competitors, but has an installation kit and a five-year warranty. In our thinking this SSD is an excellent choice and it wins the tag of best SSD 2012. The price of 256GB Plextor M5 Pro is around € 280.
