From today, commuters in London underground will need Virgin media underground Wifi pass to be able to access wifi. This comes after the news in March 2012 about Virgin media winning London underground wifi deal. This was the news on BBC then:
“From July 2012 all Tube passengers will initially be able to connect to the internet for free. After the Olympic and Paralympic Games it will be a pay-as-you-go service.”

Virgin website announces “If you’re not a customer of Virgin Media Broadband, Virgin Mobile Pay Monthly, Vodafone, EE, T-Mobile or Orange, then from 29th January 2013 you’ll need a WiFi Pass to use Virgin Media WiFi on the London Underground.”
This will apply to those on the O2 and Three mobile networks. Since that Tesco Mobile and Giffgaff also use the O2 network, their customers will also end up paying for this service.
However, as the site suggest, if you’re a Virgin Media, Vodafone or EE customer, you’ll be able to get on the internet in the London Underground for free.
If you are not with Virgin media, you will need the wifi pass on underground costing from £2.00 for a day. Weekly wi-fi pass will cost a fiver and £15 for a month.

Virgin Media Underground Wifi Pass will enable you to use WiFi in 103 stations and counting. This includes key stations like Leicester Square, Liverpool Street, London Bridge, Charing Cross, King’s Cross St. Pancras and so on.
You can connect to Virgin Media WiFi in ticket halls, escalators, walkways and platforms at available stations. There’s no signal in tunnels, but your phone will connect to the signal at the next WiFi enabled platform.

Once you’ve activated Virgin Media WiFi (either as a customer or with a WiFi Pass), your device will automatically pick up Virgin’s WiFi signal when you’re in a WiFi enabled station.
